Many homeowner will tell you that their favorite space may not actually be in their home but rather just outside on the deck. This space can be as inspiring as ones homeowner. Complete with outdoor kitchens and spas and plenty of shade. This space makes for a great place for entertaining, even in cooler climates.
Building spaces for carefree outdoor living, however, can present a few design challenges. In many cases, customers want to use cedar or treated wood products to maintain some sort of cost control. These products age, splinter, and are hard to keep clean. The market place has been inundated with a host of new decking products to suit just about everyone’s needs.
Changes in Framing Practices
With the phasing out of CCA-treated lumber, old traditions of framing practices need to be updated. We as builders must spend more time on design processes sorting out new lumber treatments that meet the demand of the project at hand. Typical framing materials may not be compatible with metal fasteners of old, leading to the premature death of a deck. While structural failures are uncommon they still present a design problem to the suspecting contractor.
Changing Code Requirements
The International Residential Code currently provides only limited deck design requirements. This leaves many local municipalities to develop their own set of building requirements. This builder adopts building practices that go beyond local building codes. We at Cabernet Design build in the cost of a railing to withstand a bar room brawl. Hopefully the state will adopt these proposed changes in deck building practice this year as well.
A walk through any big box store can create confusion and a headache to boot, trying to sort through all the choices available in decking materials. The decking industry has seen considerable growth in deck products, all making their own claims to which product is right for you. Cabernet will be more than happy to sit down with you and come up with a design and products that fit your needs.
Installing good-looking and effective guardrails requires careful consideration. The most time consuming part of deck building is handrail design and strength. Cable railings offer very little maintenance and long lasting beauty. Rod railing of a wide variety of styles to compliment any deck design. They may be constructed out of steel, aluminum, stainless steel, or even composite materials.

A Few Final Thoughts
Your outdoor living space is only limited to your budget and imagination. Decks can be constructed from stone to steel and anything in between.
Lighting plays important roles in proper deck design. Landing must be lit at night to avoid tripping hazards. Most inspector will allow solar type lighting, this avoids the need for an electrician on the job site.
Cooking requirements should be at the forefront in design considerations. So many love to smoke outdoor or would like the opportunity to do so.
Shading requirements, if you have a south facing exposure shading is a must. Screening may also be a requirement for someone like myself, I enjoy being outside after sunset, so do the mosquitoes.
